Not Sure Where to Start?
Here’s a Guide

Every woman’s situation is different.
Here’s a simple guide to help you find the right starting point.

If you’re pregnant and want one midwife throughout your entire journey...

You’re looking for continuity of care. This is the core service, covering pregnancy, birth preparation and postpartum with the same midwife from start to finish.

If you’ve already had your baby and need support with feeding, settling, or the emotional load of early parenthood...

Postpartum and early parenting support is designed for exactly this. Evidence-informed, grounded, and tailored to your family.

If you’re carrying unresolved feelings from a previous birth and want to understand what happened...

A birth debriefing session gives you space to process your experience with a trauma-aware midwife. Especially valuable if you’re considering another pregnancy.

If you’re not sure yet and just want to understand your options...

That’s completely fine. A conversation is a good place to start. There’s no commitment and no pressure. Just a chance to talk through what you’re looking for and see what feels right.

Continuity of Midwifery Care

One midwife from your first appointment through to your postpartum weeks at home. Longer appointments, evidence-informed guidance, and a relationship built on trust and genuine understanding of your story.

For women wanting personalised, consistent midwifery care across pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

Postpartum, Feeding and Early Parenting Support

Grounded, evidence-informed support for the early weeks of parenthood. Practical help with feeding, settling, and sleep, alongside emotional support for the adjustment that nobody fully prepares you for.

For new parents needing hands-on guidance and a calm, knowledgeable presence during the postpartum period.

Birth Debriefing

A single, trauma-aware session to process a previous birth experience. Space to understand what happened, ask the questions you’ve been carrying, and find a clearer path forward.

For women carrying unresolved feelings from a past birth, especially those considering another pregnancy.

Also Available: Acuneedling and Moxibustion

Caitlin is trained in Acuneedling, a gentle needling therapy designed specifically for pregnancy and postpartum. It can support pain relief, birth preparation, breech positioning, and postnatal recovery. Moxibustion therapy is also available. These treatments can be added to your existing care or booked as standalone sessions.

A Connected Approach to Private Midwifery Care

One of the most common questions women ask is, what does a private midwife actually do? The answer is: it depends on where you are in your journey and what kind of support you need.

Some women come to Beneath the Palms Midwifery for continuity of care across their entire pregnancy and postpartum, including thorough birth preparation. Others come specifically for postpartum and feeding support. Some arrive needing to process a past birth before they can move forward with confidence.

These services aren’t separate silos. They are part of a connected care model designed to meet you wherever you are. A birth debriefing might be the first step before booking continuity of care for a new pregnancy. Postpartum support might follow naturally from a continuity of care journey. Or one standalone service might be exactly what you need right now.

There’s no pressure to commit to everything. The right pathway will become clear once we talk.

Understanding Cost and Medicare Rebates

One of the biggest differences between a private midwife and hospital-based midwifery is choice. You choose your midwife, your care model, and the level of support that fits your needs. And many people are surprised to learn that private midwifery care is more accessible than they expect.

As an eligible private midwife, many of the services provided through Beneath the Palms Midwifery attract Medicare rebates. This reduces your out-of-pocket cost and makes personalised care more achievable.

Your specific cost will depend on your care needs, your Medicare eligibility, and which services are part of your plan. The best way to understand what your investment looks like is through a conversation where we can walk through it together.

Common Questions About Private Midwifery in Cairns

Do I still need to see a GP if I have a private midwife?

Caitlin provides primary maternity care, which means most clients don’t require separate GP pregnancy appointments unless specific circumstances arise. If your situation does benefit from shared care with a GP or specialist, Caitlin will discuss this with you clearly and coordinate as needed.

What if my pregnancy is high-risk or complex?

Caitlin works confidently with low to moderate risk pregnancies. If your situation involves complexities that require specialist input, she will be transparent about that and has clear referral pathways with GPs, obstetricians, and hospital teams. Safety always comes first. If you’re unsure whether your pregnancy is the right fit, a conversation is the best place to start.

How is a private midwife different from the hospital midwifery program?

With private midwifery, you see the same midwife throughout your entire pregnancy, birth and postpartum. In hospital-based programs, you may see a different midwife at each appointment, and there is no guarantee the midwife you’ve built a relationship with will be at your birth. Private midwifery also offers longer appointments, more personalised care planning, and dedicated postpartum support at home.

Can I use Medicare for private midwifery services?

Yes. As an eligible provider, many of the services through Beneath the Palms Midwifery attract Medicare rebates. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your specific care plan and eligibility. The best way to get clarity on this is through a conversation.

When should I reach out?

As early as feels right for you. Many women reach out in their first trimester, but there is no wrong time to start a conversation. Whether you’re newly pregnant, further along, or still planning, Caitlin is happy to talk through your options.
